Father Flanagan Laments A Satirical Novel
Father Flanagan Laments, a Rabelaisian satire of religious and sexual mores, follows the hilarious struggles of an all-too-human man of the cloth as he grapples with his inner demons and the hypocrisies of church and community. He is sustained, through all his many moral failures and struggles, by his absolute belief in a future where he sits through eternity at God’s feet.
Denny Goetz’s writing has been compared to that of Joseph Heller, Evelyn Waugh, Lenny Bruce, and John Kennedy Toole, and it would serve readers well to approach his novel with a healthy impatience with hypocrisy, a well-developed sense of humor, and an appreciation of the contrary forces tugging at Flanagan. Father Flanagan Laments finds humor in the disparities between church teachings and social reality. Read this lampoon. You too will finally laugh.

I read Father Flanagan Laments in fits and starts while recovering from the flu and very much enjoyed the ride. In the midst of reading I imagined the Lord Himself trying (because of his dignity) and failing (because of his wit) to suppress a guffaw at Flanagan’s never to be resolved lamentations. And who could blame Him? Lyrical in his frustrations and rapturous in his shame, Flanagan confounds his own desire to be chaste and holy; he confronts his ungoverned bowels and disobedient member in ways that, if we would admit it, speak to some of our own awkwardly pleasurable encounters with the world. As his attempts at virtue lead to failure I rejoiced in the hilarity of a good man repeatedly undone by his own self-awareness.Product details

Father Flanagan Laments A Satirical Novel Denny Goetz 9781478775942 Books Reviews
Father Flanagan is now one of my favorite fictional characters. The book flowed in a lyrical fashion. I hope this new author continues to write.
I had the pleasure of hearing Denny Goetz read in person a few years ago. This is a great book, I highly reccomend it.
This is a great book! The author takes us deep into Father Flanagan's psyche where we journey with him through his bliss and his angst, his swooning admiration and his deep insecurities. Most of all, we experience the struggle between his earthly desires and his longing to be a pious and chaste holy man (and even a martyr). In the case of Flanagan, this struggle is in the extreme, but it is a conflict that I relate to and I imagine nearly everyone can relate to (how we long to be verses how we think we should be). I often found myself laughing out loud when reading this book and other times, I was swept away by it's whimsical poetry. Still other times, I was cringing a bit at it's unflinching honesty. But I always found Father Flanagan to be absolutely endearing. Denny Goetz has done a wonderful job!
Let me confess Forgive me my joyful and prideful review, but I know the author! We met during pubescence; now, friends still, at the onset of such organs in their twilight--not working so well. But! Let me command, that whether cloistered in a favorite chair, or offering a tip of the tongue wine and a wafer nibble to family and neighbors, the blessed Flanagan's revelatory journal begets miraculous reading -- in prayerful solitude or monastic chants.
